Underground: The Tokyo Gas Attack and the Japanese Psyche

Underground: The Tokyo Gas Attack and the Japanese Psyche - Haruki Murakami, Alfred Birnbaum, Philip Gabriel Murakami is very clear about his intentions for the two parts of this book and how he went about the interviewing process, and there's a small section where he writes down his thoughts on Aum and the sarin attacks. I liked the book for its clarity, because the interviews showed the chaos of a terrorist attack from an individual perspective, and they showed how random and senseless it is and how the individual has to reconcile that in their personal narrative. I also learned that culturally the Japanese dedication to work ethic is a serious thing, and I learned what to look out for in a poison gas attack. The second part, the interviews with current and former Aum members, was just as interesting without sensationalizing the cult. It was even more interesting to draw parallels between the reasons for devotion to work between the two groups: the salarypersons and the cult members - both were dedicated to working long hours, and both had different reasons for doing so, but I think that the cult members were searching for a life outside of the daily grind but still ended up trapped in another kind of daily grind that they were okay with - but they didn't seem to draw that parallel. Fascinating look at the subway attacks and cult dynamics while being as sensitive and transparent as possible.
