I'm just gonna c/p the review I sent to my friend who prompted me to read this:
My thoughts: I liked it, it seemed VERY hetero-romantic focused in a noticeable way, I realized that using romantic fate as a major plot point is boring for me because it takes choice and nuance out of things, and I like choice and nuance and humans being themselves and figuring love out instead of love at first sight, which seems dramatic and good for narrative but it is not. And while I still like the movie a lot, and understand why they made the changes they did to the script, for once think Nicole Kidman was perfectly cast, I really liked the inclusion of the daughters in the book. It was interesting how little the aunts had personalities in the book, and for much of it were kind of just neglectful instead of benignly neglectful.
