I read about 400 pages, which is not "half" but it was enough for me to get the idea that this book was primarily about how Rebecca West wants the world to be - interspersed with some really beautiful, atmospheric descriptions of landscape and city. I wanted to hear from the people in these cities but mostly I heard West's classist anxieties coming through. And frankly I couldn't concentrate during her history lessons. But it did prompt me to skim a biography about her because I wanted to understand where she was coming from a little more, and that was interesting.
