the gorgeous colors ALMOST distracted me from the terrible ending --- or just the terrible behavior of the lady's husband and son. "Are you sad about being abandoned by us?" they ask. "No worries - here are some token bivalves to soothe your pain. BYEEEEE." And so they leave the lady alone to be shunned by her neighbors and scrabble for her meagre existence. I realize this is written to be an Easy Reader for grades 2-3, so it's going to be somewhat simplified in vocabulary or edited for manuscript length... still, I felt like something was missing. Like a sense of family. Or loyalty.
