this was much easier to read when I was sequestered in a cabin in the woods, but that says more about my distractable-ness than the book. I find Murakami's books to be soothing because the protagonists tend to be so calm no matter what weird things happen. they just take a day or so, think about things, make some pasta, put classical music on low volume, and contemplate. I did find the parts concerning Mongolia and Manchuria hard to get through just because I'm not so familiar with the historical grounding, and it's not the kind of fiction where it gets explained (I wouldn't want it to be).
