This is Louise Penny's first novel. I have forgiveness in my heart for first novels (and all novels, because when I have I written a novel, but first novels in particular). Especially if they're set in a cozy little town in rural Quebec outside Montreal.
However, Louise Penny does this thing, which is: she makes it clear that a character is receiving evidence or information, waves it in your face, and does not reveal it. Maybe she does at the end of the book or after she's teased you for a while. And that is lazy writing. That is not trusting your skills at building a mystery. And I don't care if she got better at it in the future books, because it makes me so angry that I can't give her a pass.
